Le Cimate 2012 Macchieto – Super Umbrian

One of those wines you don’t expect to find, but are thrilled when you do. From the heart of Sagrantino country comes this 50/50 blend of Sagrantino and Cabernet Sauvignon aged 6 years – 3 in barrel / 3 in bottle – the twist: the Sagrantino see French oak while the Cabernet spends its time in American … and the Cab vines are 10 years older than the 17 year old Sagrantino ones – didn’t see that coming did you? Sagrantino adds the age-ability here while the Cabernet brings the approachability: concentrated dark fruit: black cherry, plum, mocha-chocolate with spicy nuances and big tannins, plus that telltale Sagrantino acidity is the backbone … great wine with wonderful complexity; this is easily a cellar-seer for a decade or more.  (****+)
