Torres 2015 Gran Muralles

What an interesting story this wine delivers – it also tastes great so it makes the story even better. The grapes are Carinena, Garnacha, Monastrell (quite recognizable) the other two are found varieties: Garro and Querol – once thought to be extinct varieties that were quite literally found in the backyards of their countrymen. The wines average ageing time in French oak is about 18 months and is a strict barrel selection to make sure everything meshes together: the most striking part is the red fruit forward notes along with red licorice, anise, cassis and chalky / smoky notes – there is a certain minerality that carries the wine, but also a silkiness that just can’t be denied and a fresh clean acidity … ending with a chocolate-raspberry-cherry nuances that makes you want to come back to the glass again and again. The uniqueness of this wine is that it resurrects ghosts from the past to create a bright and lasting future. Brilliant.  Rating: ****+
