Caparzo 2016 Rosso di Montalcino

A delightful red from Montalcino, home of Brunello and big heavy wines (that can also get pretty pricy), but this is a Rosso, the baby of all their wines, and a great way to get an introduction to the wines of this part of Tuscany. Sourced from three vineyard sites, mostly in the north and south of the region allowing for diversity in the wine, but also consistency vintage-to-vintage … and if I may say, 2016 was one of those magical vintages, where the grapes were happy and the wines quite quaffable (so far, the big wines have yet to be released).  Light yet fruit forward with red currant and cassis leading things off, there is also a gentle smokiness and great acid punch. A wine full of finesse and elegance and one you’re gonna love to pour with dinner – because it will most certainly impress.  Rating: ****
