A blend of Syrah (64%), Grenache (14%), Cinsault (11%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) and only 1% Viognier which (believe it or not) helps to give it some lift … delivering on the promise of the label there is some bittersweet chocolate along with smoky, earthy and even some coffee notes on the nose. The mid-palate adds spicy dark fruit and pleasant acidity cleaning everything up and keeping things “fresh” for a big red. Best Chocolate Block I’ve tasted in awhile – there’s even a hint of violets that shows up on the backend. Rating: *** ½+
