There is a comparison to be made with the more famous Stellenbosch version of this wine, wherein here only 4% of the wine is Cabernet Franc and they are both from the excellent 2015 vintage – but that is where the comparison ends as both wines stand on their own two feet. Franschhoek fruit makes up only 1% of the national planting in South Africa and is considered a cooler region, so it has a very different profile: earthy, cherry and smoky aromas lead the charge; palate shows off herbal, black cherry and spice notes – Franschhoek shows the leaner side of Cab Sauv because of that cooler climate … but there’s a long finish with freshness and lots of complexity. The comparison between the two regions is worth the price of admission. Rating: ****
