There’s an element of new wood in this Pinot (1/3) as it rested for 15 months in its barrel home … there’s a real depth of flavor in this Saint-Georges that remains pretty dark and brooding even with time in glass. Dark fruit and smoky notes reign supreme but manages to add delicate spice and mineral. Red and black currants also get in on the fun while allowing anise and white smoke to linger on the finish. The tannins come off slightly aggressive, but they just need a little time to settle. Give it 5 years before you even contemplate opening it. Rating: ****+
