Glad to see De Simone using natural cork (DIAM) instead of the “plastic / synthetic” corks he has in the past – and that’s a huge step up for the age-worthiness of his wines … even better is that the wines are getting better, and surprisingly, the Merlot of 2017 is a step up from the 2016 (and that is high praise indeed). A mix of American and French oak (all new) has created a creamy, smooth and supple wine that also has spicy dark fruit, blueberry, bittersweet chocolate and even hints of a herbal element … the wine is dense and delicious with a savoury-candy like note of anise and leather on the finish.
