The David Stasiuk era at Rockway has now come and gone – kinda sad because David was turning this portfolio around; but before he left, he dropped this of a Syrah doozy on us. 18 months in oak with the Syrah being pumped over the Viognier skins and co-fermented, resulting in a wine with nice depth and complexity: earthy, floral and smoky on the nose; while raspberry, black cherry, mocha and white pepper dip in and out on the palate with each sip. There are fine tannins that don’t get in the way … it’s a pretty bottle of Syrah from one of Niagara’s weirdest and wildest vintages; seems David Stasiuk’s swan song has paid off.
