From the Cellar

Just because I started a website called OntarioWineReview.com doesn't mean it's All-Ontario-All-the-Time. When I kick back at night my mood (and sometimes my curiosity) decides my wine of choice. And the title should read, "Uncorked and Un-Screwed Tonight" ... but that just sounds wrong.

Andean Vineyards 2013 The Waxed Bat (Argentina)

11 Mar 2015

(December 23, 2014) ... An odd name for a wine considering there is no wax or bats that go into the making of this wine.  What it is is a red blend from Argentina made up of Cabernet Sauvignon (41%), Shiraz (32%) and Malbec (27%) and weighs in at a pretty hefty 14.5% alcohol.  This was my third wine received/tried from the Virgin Wine Club lot and the one that held the most interest for me.  The nose was loaded with fruit:  blackberry, and black cherry mainly with some dark chocolate and white pepper also adding to the aroma.  Palate was quite lovely with juicy blackberry, cassis, white pepper, and spice.  The finish was long and lovely with spiced plum and blueberry skin.  Of the wines I have had so far from the Virgin Wine Club this is by far my favorite ... So much so that when they later offered up the "Reserve" at a special price I was tempted to grab a case of that one too, but so far I have been able to restrain myself of any further purchases thus far ... Though I can feel soon there will be another one coming.

Rufina 2012 Collezione do Paolo Sangiovese (Italy)

10 Mar 2015

(December 22, 2014) ... Later that same day (I had my "Drinking with Dave" Adventure) I tried my second bottle of Virgin Wine Club wine, a Rufina 2012 Collezione do Paolo Sangiovese.  I found this wine to be quite pleasant with lovely blackberry, cassis, cocoa,  and raspberry on the nose.  The palate was fresh and lively with acidity, along with notes of black cherry, cassis, and a hint of oak; but the thing that really got me was just how fresh and fruity this wine was with a finish that seemed to be full of cocoa and subtle oak.  Bravo once again to the Virgin Wine Club for picking another enjoyable bottle.
