From the Cellar

Just because I started a website called OntarioWineReview.com doesn't mean it's All-Ontario-All-the-Time. When I kick back at night my mood (and sometimes my curiosity) decides my wine of choice. And the title should read, "Uncorked and Un-Screwed Tonight" ... but that just sounds wrong.

Canyon Oaks 2007 Zinfandel (California)

12 Feb 2015

(December 18, 2014) ... As a Zinfandel fan I take any opportunity to open a bottle, I don't often need an excuse ... But tonight with a rack of ribs on order I went looking for something to pair it with and found this '07 Canyon Oak number.  Nose was big on simplicity with its raspberry and vanilla; palate showed more complexity with cassis, black raspberry, smoked-cola (an odd descriptor but it seemed to fit), vanilla, and rich plum.  The finish and linger had a smoky-dried-plum note.  I found this to be a very drink-now type of Zin as it has reached its "time" ... the rest of the bottles I have stored in my cellar will be consumed with a few summer BBQs.

Kilikanoon 2006 Killerman's Run Shiraz (Australia)

12 Feb 2015

(December 14, 2014) ... The Australian Shiraz craze ran its course years ago but it is interesting to see how some of these wines fair now that they are not in the brilliance of the spotlight.  This Killerman's Run is actually one of the better older Shirazes I have had in quite some time, it showed complexity and vibrancy for its age.  Predominantly the wine was full of blackberry, cassis and black raspberry with some nice balancing peppery notes.  But what was really surprising was the real zip and zing that crossed over the tongue, and the long finish; the palate even managed to deliver a touch of spice amongst the raspberry on that peppery linger.  The wine did not come across jammy in the least, but there was a richness of creme de cassis and eucalyptus that showed up after an hour of being open ... It's the kind complexity I miss in many Shiraz these days.
