Taste it Again: ACWC Night 3 (Ontario)

03 Jul 2017

RoseHall Wines

(June 8, 2016) ... Last night of the All Canadian Wine Championship judging and I pull out three wines from Ontario, all 9+ years old to see how in the world they have stood up ... let's kick this tasting off with Pinot:

Rosehall Run 2007 Pinot Noir, Rosehall Vineyard ... this was a favourite of mine many years ago - I remember fondly drinking almost the whole bottle before realizing I needed something to eat; now 9 years form vintage date and I'm looking at light, slightly earthy notes with sour raspberry and cherry, acidity still impresses; the finish comes across as a little pruney but this is still a good wine.

Rosehall Run 2007 Cabernet Franc, Cold Creek ... Another Prince Edward County wine with 9 years on it: still alive and fresh-feeling; good tobacco, black raspberry, a little smoky, but still some spice especially on the finish.

Pelee ScheurebePelee Island 2002 Late Harvest Scheurebe ... this half bottle has been sitting in my cellar for far too long, or so I thought, but it still has some really interesting character, which I did not expect.  There's some petrol right off the top but also apricot, spiced marzipan, and yet still shows an element of freshness ... truly the most surprising bottle of the night.
