From the Cellar

Just because I started a website called OntarioWineReview.com doesn't mean it's All-Ontario-All-the-Time. When I kick back at night my mood (and sometimes my curiosity) decides my wine of choice. And the title should read, "Uncorked and Un-Screwed Tonight" ... but that just sounds wrong.

Dr Loosen 2004 Dr. L Riesling (Germany)

26 Jan 2015

(December 2, 2014) ... Dr L from Loosen Bros is a well made, value priced Riesling.  Over the years I think it has gotten sweeter in style, which makes me a fan of these older versions, if they'll age ... Which is why I pulled out this 2004 version, to see if it would do just that.  For a ten year old, under $15 bottle this wine is exceptional.  Notes of peach on the nose with tangerine on the palate, there's also a lovely mineral sensation and great balancing acidity.  As for its age, except for the neon yellow color of the wine when poured from the bottle and sitting in glass, the wine barely shows its ten years. What I truly loved was the pleasant lingering finish with just a touch of sweetness, so well balanced with that seam of acidity, plus there's the hint of tart green apple that also shows up on the finish.  Good job Doctor, pretty sure I have a younger version of this wine around here someplace, I'm gonna have to locate that one and try it as well.

Pierre Sparr Brut Reserve Cremant D'Alsace (France)

18 Jan 2015

(November 29, 2014) ... I, like many people, really dig sparkling wine, but unlike many, I drink it more often, and why not it pairs well with everything, is great for ANY occasion and there is so much inexpensive quality bubbles out there that there is absolutely no reason not to drink a bottle a month (at least).  One of those that I could easily recommend is a Pierre Spare Brut Reserve Cremant D'Alsace.  "Cremant" is just a fancy French term for sparkling wine (cause only Champagne can be called such, anywhere else in France it's cremant).  This one has those stunning aromas that lure one into a glass of fizz:  biscotti, almond, lemon, and bread crust; palate has a touch of sweetness, which fights it out with the acidity along with some lemon seed, fresh bread, and hints of creaminess and floral notes.  All in all this is quite simply put a very pretty bubbly and one worth both your time and your money ... If I were rating the wine it would be an easy 4-stars (out of five), taking value into account, I'd probably cough up a plus sign for good measure.
