Taste it Again: Wines on Canada Day 2016

19 Sep 2017

Lailey 2010 Cab-Merlot

(July 1, 2016) ... Time for a Canada Day BBQ at my brother's house, which means a few gems are pulled out and possibly a few duds too.

Kicked things off with a Lailey 2010 Cabernet-Merlot which seems to be doing well for a "drink now" wine. It's loaded with sweet dark and dried fruit while the palate is still quite smoky, with cassis, fig, tobacco, and cedar. Tannins remain firm and acidity is intact - I'm saying drink soon to get all that goodness while it's still around. (see the original review here)

C des C 2007 Cab Franc EstateNext up is a 10 year old Chateau des Charmes 2007 Cabernet Franc, Estate Bottled ... Nose shows little to nothing, even after an hour open, palate has something there, but whether you find it pleasureable depends on your definition of pleasure: it's all very leathery, with smoky-cedar and smoked-cherry; as a friend used to say "metso metso" ... neither am I liking this wine nor totally disliking it - over the next hour it develops a vegetal note which does not really add to the pleaaure-factor. (see the original review here)

Tollgate 2012 Red from Stratus ... It's a young wine that still delivers according to my original review, so here it is.

Round the BlendEnding with a California blend from Vino Rubio Cellars 2013 Round the Blend, the circle in the center of the label lists the grapes: petite sirah, syrah, merlot, petit verdot, cabernet franc, cabernet pfeffer, tempranillo, mourvedre, and pinot noir are all in there, and one of them I have never heard of! That all said the wine is an easy drinking pleasure with sweet red and black fruit, plum notes and hints of vanilla. Perfectly acceptable.
