(May 10, 2016) ... After making sure the Chardonnay wasn't corked I moved on to my chosen red of the evening. When I think Cabernet Franc, I think Ontario, Canada, where they make some great single varietal versions - but the Catena 2013 San Carlos Appellation Cabernet Franc shows that other countries are realizing what we Ontarians have known for year, Franc can be Fantastic all on its own. This one had all the markers: tobacco, black cherry, cassis, spiced raspberry, and smoky with touches of earthy, cigar box, and a leathery backing, plus there's nice dark (85%) cocoa ... Great complexity and nicely layered. Franc really got the respect it deserves from Catena.
