From the Cellar

Just because I started a website called doesn't mean it's All-Ontario-All-the-Time. When I kick back at night my mood (and sometimes my curiosity) decides my wine of choice. And the title should read, "Uncorked and Un-Screwed Tonight" ... but that just sounds wrong.

Columbia Crest 2007 Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon (Washington)

Columbia Crest 2007 Horse Heaven

(September 3, 2017) ... I'm a fan of this line of Columbia Crest wines from Horse Heaven Hills in Washington - they range from good to great and this year was a real revelation at the time I bought it, showing how far Washington Cab has come. Now 10 years from vintage date and it still has great notes to please both the olfactories and the buds: namely cassis, blackberry, and spiced blueberry; it's dry and still tannic on the palate but that fruit raises it up a notch and the finish goes for the throat with a pleasant combination of cinnamon and black cherry. Still a great bottle of wine.

A Treasure Trove of Reds (Spain / Canada / Australia)

28 Dec 2018

(September 2, 2017) ... Climbing the ladder of age from 2006 to 2014 and from a small array of countries:

Lan 2006 Crianza (Spain) ... You gotta love how well Spanish wines age, and this LAN is a delight for those who like 'em aged: smoky, cedar, spiced-raspberry, balsamic-strawberry, and cinnamon all come out in this 11 year old wine.

Henry of Pelham 2012 Cabernet-Merlot, Estate (Ontario, Canada) ... A big vintage for reds in Ontario and Henry took full advantage with this Cab-Merlot blend, and it still has plenty of life left in it: spicy and still quite tannic, so it needs time in glass or even a slight decant, but once there the cassis, blackberry, cedar, cocoa, and black raspberry really wow. Surprisingly this one is still on shelves.

Mollydooker 2014 The Boxer Shiraz (Australia) ... Looking for 16% alcohol wines? Molly has you covered, their wines just have lots of booze and in the good ones you can barely tell. This one is big and rich and slightly jammy with its blackberry, black cherry and vanilla; that 16% is very well hidden.
